Bluetooth headphones in Ubuntu

Working Bluetooth headphones in Ubuntu/Mint

Problems

  1. Enabling HFP/HSP failed silently under Linux Mint 16 (Ubuntu Saucy)
  2. WiFi connection lag when A2DP enabled

Steps

First of all I had to install the latest kernel using this script (which will be quickly outdated, but gives an idea of the steps).

To be sure, I also upgraded the bluez package to the latest ubuntu version using APT pinning

On rebooting, I found that I could use HFP/HSP fine, but then I noticed my wifi was lagging greatly. Following investigation using mtr, I realised this only happend when A2DP was enabled. This seems to be related, and the workaround provided (also below) did the trick for me.

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 bt_coex_active=0 power_save=0 auto_agg=0 swcrypto=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf > /dev/null
sudo rmmod iwldvm iwlwifi
sudo modprobe iwldvm iwlwifi
